Browser extension privacy policy
This policy covers the LLM Configurator browser extension ("Can I Run This LLM?") for Chrome, Edge and Firefox. In short: it collects nothing, sends nothing, and keeps the one thing you tell it in your own browser.
What the extension stores, and where
Two things, both in your browser's storage for this extension, on your computer:
- Your rig: the kind of machine you picked (a graphics card, a Mac chip and its memory, or a computer without a graphics card) and, if you chose one, what you mostly use AI for. It stays until you change it, remove the extension or clear the extension's data.
- Which model or Ollama tag you last clicked "Open in side panel" for, so the panel can show it. This is held in session storage, removed as soon as the panel reads it, and cleared when the browser closes.
What it does not collect
The extension has no account, no sign-in, no analytics, no advertising, no tracking pixels and no cookies of its own. It does not record your browsing history, what you search for, or which pages you visit.
Nothing is sent anywhere
The extension makes no network requests. The model and hardware data it uses are bundled inside it when it is built, and every calculation runs on your computer. A data update arrives as a new version of the extension through your browser's store, not as a download by the extension.
When you click a link in the extension, such as "Full comparison", your browser opens a page on llmconfigurator.com in the normal way. Those links carry utm_source=chrome_extension and a campaign name (sidepanel, huggingface or ollama) so our site's analytics can count visits that came from the extension. They carry nothing about your rig. Our website's own privacy policy covers that visit.
What it reads on the sites it works on
On huggingface.co it reads the address of the page and the model details Hugging Face publishes in the page (the model's name, the base model it declares and its parameter count) to decide whether it is a model we can size. On ollama.com it reads the page address and the tag names in the tag list. It reads nothing else, stores none of it, and sends none of it. It runs on no other website.
Permissions, and why each is needed
The extension asks for these permissions and no others:
- storage: Saves the rig you describe (your graphics card or Mac, its memory, your use case) in your browser, so you set it up once.
- sidePanel: Shows the LLM Configurator panel beside the page you are reading.
- https://huggingface.co/*: Reads the model page you are on (its address, and the model details Hugging Face puts in the page) to show the card under the model header.
- https://ollama.com/*: Reads the Ollama library page you are on (its address and tag list) to show a fit and speed chip next to each tag.
Your control
You can change your rig at any time from the side panel ("My rig", then "Change rig"). Removing the extension deletes everything it stored. You can also clear its data from your browser's extension settings.
Changes to this policy
If a future version needs to handle data differently, this page will say so before that version is released, and the date at the top will change.
