Find the right private AI for your computer

Tell us what you want to do and what computer you have. In about a minute you get one plan: which free app to install, which model to download, and what to expect. The models come from a short list that is checked against the makers' own pages and re-checked every few weeks.

How it works

Picks last verified 2026-10-06.

  1. Pick what you want to do, and what computer you have.
  2. Tell us the chip and memory, or skip and we assume a modest machine.
  3. Get one plan: the free app to install, the model to download, three first questions to try, and an honest note on speed.

What it can plan for

  • Everyday assistant: Questions, summaries, ideas
  • Writing and editing: Emails, drafts, rewrites
  • Ask my documents: Questions about your own files
  • Coding help: Explain, write and fix code
  • Translate, other languages: Including Polish and Chinese

Covers Apple Silicon Macs and Windows PCs, with or without a graphics card. Linux and phones are not covered yet.

Questions beginners ask

What does the Model Finder do?

It turns "I want a private assistant on my MacBook" into one plan: the free app to install, the AI model to download, and what to expect. You never need to know what a parameter or a quantization is.

Does it cost anything or need an account?

No. It is free and there is no sign-up. The apps and models it recommends are free to download too.

Is anything I enter sent anywhere?

Your answers are used in your browser to build the plan. Like the rest of this site, we use Google Analytics to count rounded usage (system type, a rough memory tier, your goal) so we can see what people need, and we never record names or anything you type. The share link keeps your answers in the address so you can come back to your plan; the part with your chip, memory and graphics card sits after the # in that address, which browsers do not send to any server.

Which computers does it cover?

Apple Silicon Macs, and Windows PCs with or without a dedicated graphics card. Linux, phones and tablets are not covered yet.

How accurate is the speed?

It is an estimate from a published model, shown as a range in words per second. How fast it feels depends on what else your computer is doing, so we label it an estimate.

Will it feel like ChatGPT?

For everyday questions, drafting and summaries, often yes. Local models are smaller than the big cloud ones, so expect good everyday help, not the very best answers on hard problems.

Why so few models?

A short list we have checked beats a long one nobody can choose from. Each model's size, licence and download were read from the makers' pages and the date is shown on your plan.

No sign-up. Your specs are not stored with your name. Like the rest of this site, we use Google Analytics to count rounded usage (system type, a rough memory tier, your goal), and we never record names or anything you type.
